Regarded as one of the finest T20 batters in the modern game, West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran shocked the cricketing world on Monday night by announcing his retirement from all forms of international cricket. His decision came just days after South African star Heinrich Klaasen — another powerhouse in the shortest format — also stepped away from international duty.

Pooran, who has captained the West Indies in the past, confirmed that he will continue playing franchise cricket around the world. However, his exit has reignited concerns among cricket fans about the future of international cricket, especially amid the ever-expanding global T20 league circuit.

Nicholas Pooran announces retirement

Taking to Instagram to share his decision, Pooran wrote: "After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket.

"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much — joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.

"To the fans — thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion.

"To my family, friends, and teammates — thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all.

"Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead."

Fans react

He is not the first cricketer to step away from the international stage to focus solely on franchise commitments. In recent years, this has become an increasing trend, with many players retiring while still in their prime.

Many fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their disappointment, blaming T20 leagues for "killing international cricket" as more players retire from national duty in favor of franchise play.

The 29-year-old now departs as the most capped West Indian player in T20 Internationals. He represented the West Indies in 106 T20I matches and is the team's all-time leading run-scorer in the format, with 2,275 runs.
