India is set to embark on a pivotal journey in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle — one that brings fresh leadership, intense rivalries, and demanding overseas tours. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from Test cricket, Shubman Gill has been handed the captaincy. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain for now, as confirmed by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

In this WTC cycle, India will play 18 Test matches across six series — evenly split between home and away. After reaching the final in the first two editions but falling short of the title in the 2025 final, the team is hungry for redemption. If Gautam Gambhir continues as head coach throughout the cycle, he'll be aiming to guide India to their first-ever WTC title.

The campaign of Men in Blue will begin with a five-match Test series against England away from home, a key battle that could set the tone for the rest of the cycle.

About India's WTC 2025–27 calendar

With Gautam Gambhir contracted as head coach until 2027, he's likely to remain at the helm through the WTC Final. This cycle could also mark a turning point for Indian cricket, as veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have either retired or are approaching the end of their Test journeys — paving the way for a new generation to take charge.

The Indian Test team will begin their 2025–27 cycle with a crucial five-match away series against England, and then later in the year, host the West Indies in October and South Africa in December, each for two-Test series.

In 2026, India will play four away Tests — two in Sri Lanka in August and two in New Zealand between October and December. The cycle will conclude in 2027 with a high-stakes five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home against Australia.
